Fishing charter out of Kawhia, North Island, New Zealand
Season update:
The spring Snapper spawn is in full
swing. This is a great time of the year to fish for
those big spawning West Coast snapper. Very seldom do
people have the chance to see such big fish come onto
the boat in such large numbers any where in the country.
It is a truly amazing fishery and a magic time of the
year. The month of September is when they first start
to move into the spawning grounds off Kawhia. These
fish spend there winter months out wide on the 150 to
180 meter mark. We have fished for them out there over
the winter months and have caught many fish over the
12lb mark but can tell you it is a long way to wind
a snapper up. Much better fun on the Blue Nose and Puka
grounds at that time of the year.
September was a month of good weather
and had some good trips fishing the sixty meter line
and many double figure fish were bought on the boat.
Then as we came into the month of October we had the
dreaded Spring Equinox winds arrive. Winds from the
West and just bad news for the Charter operators on
the west coast. Many charters had to cancelled or postponed
due to the conditions. Good for the fish though. Then
as quickly as they came they stopped.
November arrived and the fish seemed
to sense the warmer water and it has been action stations
ever since. We have had the odd slow day and I am not
afraid to admit it, unlike some of the charter operators
but that is way of fishing. My skipper Paul reckons
these are the days that the fish are spawning and have
other things on there mind other than feeding!!! Over
the last five days the fishing has been unheard of.
Many days since we have started the charter operation
we have caught our limit by mid day but the last four
days I have seen a fishing madness not seen before.
We have caught our limit within an hour and a half.
That is some times over 100 fish on board in that time.
Just unbelievable.
We have had a number of people catch
some really big fish and I mean over twenty pounds only
to ask for a photo and then return the fish back to
the water. I take my hat off to these people as they
are a rare breed indeed. I have seen many marlin tagged
and realised and more of those big spawning snapper
should go the same way in my opinion.
There is about six weeks till the end
of the year so it is hoped that the weather gods look
kindly down on us and the snapper keep biting. Next
thing the game fish will arrive and it will be all on.
We are now getting many people rebooking
with us as soon as they are back at the Kawhia wharf.
We are getting many new charters also which is great
as word and mouth is spreading about what Three O Fishing
has to offer. We have many people comment about the
speed of the boat, about the help and advice that we
give and that if the weather is doubtful then the trip
is postponed or cancelled. No point in scaring people
just to put some coin in the bank. I have told Paul
(skipper) not to look at the fuel gauges but get Crazy
Horse on the plane and get out there and do what we
do best. That is catch fish.

The West coast fishery off Kawhia is
relatively untouched due to its isolation. All species
of fish abound in the area at certain times of the year
from huge spawning Snapper, xos Kingfish, massive Bass
and world record Striped Marlin. Crazy Horse is
well placed to give you the ultimate fishing or any
other adventure you wish to put together.
